Feels like home

We took it outside the service bay!

Today was our first full day of RV ownership. Twenty four hours in and we’re still loving it. And - get this - we even took it outside today!

We woke up to temperatures in the teens and some lingering snow from yesterday. We decided to wait for the plows do to their job and let the sun warm up the pavement a bit. It gave us an opportunity to go through more of the manuals and start to understand all the control panels and gauges. We also spent some time playing with the different power systems … from shore power to batteries to generator to solar. Interesting stuff.

While Lisa was testing all the electrical outlets and USB ports, I was in my element setting up the coach Wi-Fi system. I spent a lot of time researching connectivity options and settled on something called the WiFiRanger Denali Pack. It consists of an indoor dual band router (the Spruce) and an outdoor router/antenna that picks up Wi-Fi signals from up to 1.5 miles away (the Denali). Setup was a bit involved, but so far I’m really happy with it. You can find it here.

But what fun is an RV if you’re not out on the road ?!?! Finally, the plows finished up, the roads were clear and we got that baby outside! Of course, Lisa had the honor of taking her on her maiden voyage. I was more than happy with that. I had more fun playing with the Mercedes Infotainment system.

First, a quick trip to the Winnebago Visitor Center. Closed, due to pandemic.

Then, an obligatory stop at Bomgaars. Great selection of Tack and Saddlery products.

Finally, a drive through the Cabin Coffee Company. Tight squeeze.

After a quick lunch in our rig, we spent the afternoon “boondocking” in the Lichtsinn RV parking lot. Talk about roughing it! It did give us an opportunity to test out all the systems without being tethered to “shore power”. I’ve got to say that it was bitter cold outside and the wind was whipping, but it stayed toasty warm inside with the electric heat humming along. On battery power.

It turns out that we’re going to be here a few more days. There continues to be some ice storms running up through the Midwest and we’re not interested in trying to slide through them. We’re expecting to spend New Years Eve and New Years Day in Forest City, Iowa and then start the trek home during a few day break in the storms.

At some point I might even be able to get outside and do some real photography. Iowa in the winter will give me an opportunity to work on my brown and gray palette.

In the meantime, I can take great joy in the fact that Lisa finally let me behind the wheel. Tomorrow, she might even let me start the engine.
